Filosofia e storia della filosofia in Eugenio Garin

In this paper I outline the concepts of philosophy and the history of philosophy in the work of Eugenio Garin. Starting from three famous books, La filosofia come sapere storico (The Philosophy as Historical Knowledge), Cronache di filosofia italiana (Chronicles of Italian Philosophy) and Intellettual iitaliani del XXsecolo (Italian Intellectuals of Twentieth Century), published in 1959, in 1955 and in 1974, I try to show Garin’s wide and pluralistic notion of philosophy and his idea of history of philosophy as reconstruction of intellectual life originated from and aimed at a specific historical situation. Finally, I focus on the question of historical evaluation in the philosophical historiography of Eugenio Garin.
