The article analyzes the genesis and the content of the ‘aesthetic problem’ in the philosophy of Benedetto Croce. In particular, attention is immediately drawn to the philosophical physiognomy of this problem: it is rooted in the principle according to which‘art is knowledge’and of which it is necessary to clarify the type of knowledge. We follow the thread of Croce’s argumentation in his first writings on aesthetics, the Tesi (1900) and the Estetica (1902/04).The analysis of the aesthetic problem in this ‘first form of Croce’s gnoseology’ is articulated in three parts: The Aesthetic Archipelago,The Aesthetic Problem and Intuition,Vico’s Ring.
